Beginning to list items on Artyah this summer. I gave it a half hearted attempt in 2016 and I made one sale. I let the listings expire, but recent conversation has led them there again. To promote this new venture I made some bookmark type business cards to pass out at local shows. My Artyah Gallery is the Midnight Creations, the same as I use all around the web and in person.

Simple cardstock with the Artyah logo and a small note that I will be having my creations available. I am also working on show flier to hand out and will include that along with my Etsy address and local retail outlets.
I cuted them up with some torn fabric as the tassel. I hope to chat this up Saturday at the Berkley Art Bash. I have made 48 of these to hand out, I will make more as necessary, and plan to send them in packages.

So the freebie market tote is for all through the end of August, visit my new and still stocking Artyah shop here.

Here are the main components dis-assembled, there was a front, back and the arm areas. I removed all the hems, seams and elastic

The tote completed, I used the quilted fabric for the sides and the handles. I paired this with a quilting fabric in an olive floral, the front which is the side shown, has a pocket, that does not show in the floral fabric.

I made the handles out of the quilted fabric and added a band of the floral to break up all the green.

Inside it is lined with the plain canvas that was the back of the chair cover, I added a magnetic snap as a closure.

I have had some downtime sewing for shows and decided to work on some American girl items. The clothes below are mostly worked from patterns. The above pink and black outfit is a replica of an AG item, Julie's Calico Dress. I drafted a pattern from the dress which we recently got, it is below. It took me a few hours to fashion the pattern, make a practice dress then create the final above. I also made some leggings from rib-knit, so they sort of look like tights. I paired the outfit with a pair of AG boots, from the Sparkly Camp Outfit. I really love this dress and the updated fabrics, I also love the AG version, below I have it paired with purple leggings, that were made from the same as the black above.

Julies Calico dress, from AG it comes with red tights and cute brown boots, that remind me of "goucho boots" I myself had in the 70's. I made to go with this set a yo-yo headband, it came with a bandana type of scarf which I could not get to work.

Continuing to sew above is the same purple leggings and a long sleeve T-shirt in a sweet floral and butterfly print, and to top it off a matching headband.

Another long sleeve T-shirt and a collection of mini purses, I added these to my craft shows during the holidays, I am going to add a few to my etsy store.

Below just a few examples of the tote by itself with a doll, this is MYAG #53
I will be listing these over the next few weeks, they are on sale for $5.00 each, and work great for American Girl as well as other 18" dolls, they are about 3.5" wide, and 3" tall, they have ribbon handles and many have embellishments such as ribbon, rick rack and buttons. Totes are fully lined and interlined with fleece for shape and durability, they can be found in the "Something Different" section in my etsy store.
How does this happen, four years gone by and never done a proper review of this machine. Well this may not be a proper review but some thoughts on it. I got my Juki DDL-9000B-SS in early 2011, I got it brand new from a local dealer. I did several blog posts as I went through the buying process at that time.

I use this machine (at the time of this post) for 99% of my sewing, both for items for sale and personal items as well. It is really my only fully functioning machine, I have two home machines, a Viking which is considered my back up and an old Kenmore which has not been turned on in over 10 years.

My first thought to share is this was absolutely the best decision for my sewing needs, four years later I know it was the right decision. I love this machine, its reliability, speed and power and quality of stitching with little thought to running the machine in terms of adjustments and tension quality.

The pros and cons, I took care to not look at an much earlier post on this topic as to live in the now of using this machine, though I am guessing some of the pros and cons will be the same.

Pros:

Speed, it is fast, faster then I use and also faster in capability then I can handle, though to go along with this "pro" item two:

Amazing control and responsiveness from the foot pedal, I can go crazy fast, or painfully slow with a great amount of control from the foot pedal.

Stitches beautifully regardless of item being sewn stitches are tight and well formed. All this with virtually no adjustment of tensions.

Machine is sturdy and steady, being of metal construction, and being mounted to a fairly hefty table, it is unwavering during sewing. When I would sew certain items with my old machine, loud grinding, and shifting would happen and was additionally more noise in the household.

Lighting, I have gotten very use to the external light of the machine, the gooseneck light is bright and adjustable I can really zone in on certain items as needed.

Presser foot lift with foot pedal....ahhh all I can say I got use to this feature very quickly and it is awesome. I use this all the time, for turning corners and for manipulating layers around the needle, I can work with both hands at the same time, and raise lower presser foot with my foot on the foot pedal.

Needle down positioning, this too is used during many of my creations during construction. When turning a corner, coming to a stop, the needle stays in the fabric, I simply lift presser foot (see above), adjust then continue sewing. I know this is a common feature on home machines as well.

Back tack located in two positions, this is very nice, but I could live without it. It has a lever to the right which would be a traditional location for this, but it also has a button (it is oval shaped above) on the neck of the machine just right of the needle, this is a button I can push with my finger. It is handy as I can reach over as needed without removing my hands from the item in construction. It is a nice feature I and use it a lot but it is not that hard to reach over 12 inches and use the lever.

Thread cutting again, this is very nice and would be hard to not have now, when completing an item a quick rock backwards on the foot pedal cuts the thread and sweeps it away to the right for the next sewing.

Begin and ending sewing auto back tacking. At the start and end of every new sewing the machine automatically sews forward, back 4 stitches, then forward again to continue to sewing. It did take a bit of getting used to but now I know how to use it or work around it as needed, and not having to backtack all the time is nice.

Needle finishes "up" I do love this, when you complete sewing and clear an item away the machine is ready to go, no need to get the bobbin thread to the top of the plate, no worrying the machine will come unthreaded.

Quiet operation, my machine does not hum, I know there are industrial machines with motors that can sit idle and have a mechanical hum to them, this does not. Going from memory, I believe this is because of the internal motor. It is also a quieter machine to use then any plastic home machine I have had, my husband who is in the office next to mine also said it is significantly quieter.

Winding a bobbin the same time as sewing, this is nifty to wind from a separate thread bobbins as I sew...but with this pro, there will be a con listed below.

Sewing with monofilament thread, in any combination this has been a nice surprise, the stitch quality and reliability is great, both when I have monofilament on top and bottom-which I could not do on my home machine, and when I have mono on top and cotton/poly in the bobbin. I use monofilament thread often and rely on it often, this was a dreaded task on my home machine.

Cons:

Threading this machine....I hate it, in most instances I plan my sewing by color anyway and sew large quantities not having to change threads, but when I do it is a pain. There are from placing the spool on the to holder all the way to needle thirteen (13) points in which the thread needs to pass, and I have to stand up to start the process. Along with this, I have had to get reading glasses to see the needle hole...so of course that is a con :(

Servicing, I have had to have this done 2 times now and being in a niche situation there are not a lot of service options available. I have had an independent service tech out to my house on two occasions, and of course there are not a lot of people servicing this market. I have only had to wait a few days for service, but like servicing an appliance (if anyone actually does this anymore) there is a fee for just walking in the door, then the repairs/parts fees. In my two instances I have spent about $375.00 in servicing. Which leads to my next con.

I know very little about the internal workings of the machine, I have not spent a lot of time or energy trying to figure it out. In most sewing and use of this machine it is just fine, but I am unable to diagnose and fix bigger problems that arise, which resulted in service calls. In both instances I sort of knew what the problem was but was incapable of fixing them. I can add to this since my two calls, I am slightly more able to fix certain problems. But in general if the machine stops...I need help.

Ordering from my dealer, there is a $20.00 minimum, now that is not very much but I had a zipper foot break, its replacement was less then $2.00 so I had to order more stuff to get to $20.00, then I needed a light bulb this was $4.00 so I had to order more stuff. Let's just say I have enough bulbs and needles to last a good long while.

It is not portable...obviously, so when I want to be on the go, out comes my old awful home machine. Minor but one of those things to consider, not having a decent travel machine is something I want to fix.

Winding the bobbin, you pretty much have to be sewing to wind a bobbin, in a home machine you can just wind a bobbin when you need it. For this machine the needle is always going up and down, and not having it sewing is bad on the machine. So if I want or need a new color, I will just sew and waste thread to get it filled. I am sort of use to this and can plan ahead, but it can be a pain. Also to threading, like the needle the thread has to pass through 4 locations to be ready to wind.

I cannot sew delicate items, now this may be a combination of my needles, threads, and tensions (which I have not bothered to figure) but sewing tulle is impossible as an example. Also sewing ribbons on with monofilament thread is impossible as well.

All in all, I love this machine and would pick it all over again. But there are a few cons that have me on the verge of purchasing a new home sewing machine, that with the portability should address my sewing needs.

Next up, will be hauling out my serger and seeing if I can bring that back to life, and to complete my sewing repartee I would love an embroidery machine and a steam press.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-42137373127013376272015-01-08T12:54:00.000-05:002015-01-08T12:56:59.798-05:00Merchandise Bags from Catalog Pages

This was actually a fun and quick little project, and I still have about 1/2 the catalog left, though admittedly I have already used most of the really colorful pages. This will be great for an upcoming Clearance show I hope to do in early February.
I often use two styles of bows on my purses and totes, and have a few tricks to share. I use a variety of gros grain ribbon, without wire, and prefer this over satin ribbons. I have found my machines sort of eat the satin and twist it around easily, the gros grain is more forgiving.

First I apply the wrap around ribbon, I use monofilament quilting thread on the top, and sometimes on the bottom. You can also use a cotton on the bottom in a matching color to the ribbon. This way if the monofilament pulls the bobbin to the top it will blend with the ribbon.

Bag or item to be embellished

Ribbon

Fray check

Monofilament thread, I prefer quilting type, I find it thinner and stronger

Using a larger basting stitch, I hold the ribbon in place as I sew, I do not use pins as I like to reduce the amount of holes put into the ribbon, also it shifts so it does need adjusting along the way. I sew on the top of the ribbon, and again on the bottom, two rows of stitching. I also try to sew the top in one direction, flip and sew in the opposite the bottom row. This helps to not have it twist and pull the bag out of shape.

Once you have the ribbon around the bag, you can decide on your style of bow, either a tied bow or a looped bow, I will start with the looped bow, for this will be using a different sample from above.
Start by looping ribbon back and forth, for this tote the bow is about 4 inches, pinching in fingers add 2 loops per side.

Once you have the loops finish off with a center loop, which will form a circle, cut end off and included in the center, fray check is a good idea on this open edge.

Pin bow, now it is ready to be added to your bag. I remove my presser foot and use the "top" of my buttonhole stitch, but a zig zag stitch set at "0" would achieve the same result. I tack this back and fourth about 6-10 times. You can see the tack in picture 2 - remember this is a clear thread, but it is there. Be sure to sew through and secure all layers.

Now for the tied bow. I sew my length of ribbon, in this case I use about 20 inches, I sew it perfectly perpendicular to the ribbon installed on the tote. I fold the edges inward to the center, then I simply sew back and forth 6-10 times to secure it in place.
Continuing my scrap fabric clear out and have made quite a few new items. Pieced cosmetic pouches, above. Below are pieced composition books. They were all quite fun to do and really knocked down my scrap.
I take a deep water exercise class at the YMCA, one of the ladies was turning 65 and this was the gift I made. Most don't know that I sew and sew A LOT, so this received lots of raves. The theme of the gift was to do something 65-ish, so my take was to sew on 65 buttons to this jean cosmetic pouch.
I have loads of buttons, it was fun counting and re-counting the buttons to make sure I got it right, I used red and white buttons, and lined it in a red and white polka-dot. I think start to finish, including hand sewing 65 buttons was about 2 hours. I used hand quilting thread to secure the buttons so I could do less hand sewing with a stronger thread.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-60279158804626526352014-03-05T11:55:00.003-05:002014-03-05T11:56:14.298-05:00New Items From the Scrap Basket

I have spent some time going through my mountain of scraps and making a few pieced items. Before Valentines day I made a bunch of these heart coin purses. And below a few houses with raw edge applique and an assortment of embellishments.

The piles started like this, sorted by colors, I spent about two days ironing and sorting by size, it looks so ready to go when done, and kind of a relief to do some sorting and tossing.
I started with the hearts and just sewed like colors then cut into my heart shape. I dropped these off at Yellow Door before Valentines, but I like them so much I added a few to my etsy shop, and plan to offer them for the year.
I have finally mastered a box pouch or a Dopp Kit. A Dopp Kit is a boxed shaped toiletries bag traditionally used by men to hold shaving and other supplies when traveling. Often made of leather or vinyl, of course I only use the cutest of cottons, so sadly once again the boys get gipped.

I have two sizes, each zip closures and tabs for easy zipper pull, the larger has a handle. The best part of these pouches is no exposed seams, when you look inside it is beautifully finished, like all my other zip products. This was essential for me to start offering these so it took a few trial and error and a peek at a few tutorials to get it right, I hope to offer more sizes in the future for now I have two.

Small size, which is more a mini size is 5"w x 3"d x 2.5-3"t. They vary some as beyond the intitial cutting I sort of eyeball the rest so they do vary up to a 1/2" in any direction.

The large size, which also has a handle on the top is 7"w x 5"d x 4"t, these too may vary ever so slightly. This is a great size to tuck in a weekend bag or use in the bath for morning routine.

It is hard to pick a favorite feature, but what I do love is the inside, no seams and when pulled open you can see the items.

I have already been selling these locally at shows as well as Yellow Door Art Market. I began offering them this week in my etsy store, small $12.00 and the large $18.00.
I have done this mainly by calorie counting, portion control, less snacking and very recently eliminating diet soda. I eat things in moderation and do not specifically follow any weight loss plan, I loosely follow the "Volumetrics" theory, and "If it Fits in Your Macros (IIFIYM).

I use daily in fact MANY times daily an online calorie counter called My Fitness Pal, which I discovered in July when I got my Ipad. Tracking calories and nutrients has been the backbone of my progress. I lost most of the weight so far through eating, with some exercise, this is changing since 2013.

I have joined the local YMCA and am now taking a deep water exercise class three times a week, spinning once a week, and weight training two times a week. To this I walk on my own, roller skate one to three times a week, and do some home kettlebell, circuit training and yoga. Sounds like a lot huh, I'd be impressed. Actually I am impressed admittedly I don't like working out and 6 months ago a walk or a skate once in a while was the total sum of my workout routines. I do like the results and accept this has to be part of the game now, so hopefully some day I will love this aspect of my new found healthier lifestyle.

I know everyone loves before and afters. First picture taken mid July after set up at an art fair, second picture is today January 29th, 45 pounds down. Then below face comparison. I still plan to lose another 36 pounds and hope to do this by about September, I know now it is a journey not a race.
Here it is my completed foyer makeover. Our new focal or statement piece the large buffet that we remade this last March, from a piece we got at a consignment shop for 55.00. We spent about 60.00 on supplies and hardware to finish the piece, purchased a few accessories and framed a piece of art made buy our daughter, it is a huge improvement of the prior space.
The color is a teal blue from Behr, we actually were able to paint the entire thing with the 3.00 sample from The Home Depot. New hardware and some color detail in the flower motifs on the drawers.
We sanded the heck out of this, and washed in thouroughly, the painting was done inside, using a dry brush technique, where we put on the paint then removed some by brushing with long strokes with a dry brush, this allowed some of wood beneath to shine through.
Below is the piece as we purchased it, dark and huge brass hardware, our piece completed and then my inspiration piece. Admittedly I am still looking for the perfect bust for our room, it has actually been a running joke...I know one is out there that will look great.
So the before and after pics, ok, the first before picture, this area is a complete mess, honestly most days it was a bit neater, well a few days a week it was anyway. Our foyer is large and really is a huge dumping ground for pretty much everything.
Entry into our home, much nicer and neater now, and honestly people really seem to like the piece and are quite impressed with our accomplishment. The buffet holds a lot, in the center we each get a drawer to stash stuff, like mail, keys, phone, library books. The left side holds a lot of my crafting books from the shelf that used to be here, and on the right my MOST favorite part a large rubber bin to hold shoes, they are no longer strewn all across the foyer, honestly THIS is the best part.

I can check another item off my New Years Resolution list, I can now accept credit cards at shows, or anywhere with my new Square Credit Card Reader. Above is the box you can literally find just about anywhere, it is free to get started. I got my reader at Radio Shack but have seen them at Best Buy, Target and Wal Mart. You sign up online and you are ready to take charges anywhere, anytime.

With this can my newest toy The New Ipad (add swooning here). This combo has really taken my show experience to a new level, the words "why didn't I do this sooner" have passed through my head many times. Though I do remind myself it was a building and learning process to get to this point, so while I am not disappointed I had waited, really I could have and should have done this about a year ago.

Why I waited and what I learned. I waited because I did not have a smartphone, and I really did not want the expense of a 50.00 monthly data plan, plain and simple this is why I do not and did not have or want a smart phone. Oh I was all set to get one last July but the realization of cable, DH smart phone and one for me just seem like an unnecessary expense. So I watched my husband use his smart phone for a year and realized it really was the right decision for me to not have one, but I wanted a tablet of some kind. I also wanted to process credit cards via this method, swipe and go.

As I got ready for a large show in the summer the final decision was that I would take my husbands phone and process that way. That was about the time Verizon (our provider) introduced the new share everything plan and I could add a tablet to the plan for 10.00 a month, the decision became easy and obvious. My husband was worried about battery life at the show, days were 10-12 hours and he thought no way his phone would hold out. Since I had been wanting a tablet since the begin of the year, getting and adding an Ipad to our plan was the way I went.
I opted for the 4G/wi fi model, above is the first screen you will get when you log into your square app, which you will need to download to your device. The second pic is Ipad with card reader in the head set jack. As you see in the left picture this would be where you could key in your total, I have tax added to mine, that is something you can set up as needed. I still hand wrote all my receipts, even when a customer used cc. I however entered my entire inventory into the square with my "stock photos".
Here is a "page" of my inventory, I had about 4 pages of stock sorted alphabetically, you could sort by a category but for me this worked best. Also I was able to add options to items, on the top you see my carabiner coin purse, I did not need to add 3 separate items, but could differentiate between size/price. If I hit carabiner, this window with 3 options pops up, just tap the one needed.
When you have added all your items you are ready to process, on top you can see items entered and tax calculated along with a total. Swipe your card, when the card reader is first attached you will see the black reader box, this minimizes to below the white box, you will know it is correctly connected. After card is swiped a box will pop up for customer signature. They can use their finger though I had a stylus which I think worked better.

After signature a completed screen will appear, you will be given the option to enter an email or phone number for email or text receipts. This info will not be saved for you, it is kept private for the buyer.

For my show I put up signs on every wall in my booth as well as on the outside so people looking in could see I could process credit cards. I will say about 1/3 of my sales (in dollars) were credit card.
I have officially finished my first multi-day outdoor show. I am sharing a few pics of my time at this show and of course a few thoughts. This is a huge show, in Michigan I think it is the second largest, second to The Ann Arbor Art Fair which is this week.

My serious prep for this show can mid April when I learned I got into the show. I had at that time between etsy and my stock I use for off line about 450 items made. My first step was making a dream list of inventory, where I listed my entire line and how much I hoped to take. This went through many changes and became my sewing list. My final number of items I was aiming to make was around 1200 items, with a value just under 15K. I kept an excel spreadsheet of inventory, supplies needed and random comments. This spreadsheet was a tool I used pretty much all day everyday getting ready, and really kept me on track for sewing. Yes, I finished my goal of 1200 items made, actually I think 1187 but we can call it 1200 I may have missed a few along the way.

For this show I also had to invest in some additional displays, I hope to do 2-4 outdoor shows a year, so these purchases were inevitable, for other displays I used things from around the house. I bought weights for my tent and 4 additional grid walls, a metal shelf for on my table and more hardware for the grid walls. As for display items for future shows I am pretty well set, though I am contemplating replacing 4 of my older grid walls for newer ones, the new ones were MUCH lighter.

For set up, it was the night before starting at 8:30 pm and went to midnight, you might think setting up at midnight would be my thing...no thank you. Luckily we had some friends help and were finished with the tent, gridwalls, tables and other small display items in about an hour.

The hard-work, or the long time consuming part of the task was putting up for display 1200 items. When you have three months of neatly organizing and counting them it seems this would be an easy task to display them. It took myself and my friend and her husband about 2.5 hours. This was definitely an area where I learned something for future shows.

This shows the table that had the most on it, and this was also the table that saw the most action. On the left is a metal shelf that I got just before the show, it gave me some much needed height and dimension and my kanzashi clutches looked great on it. This shelf is better used for items that can sit on their own, rather then being in a basket as the shelf part had lots of gaps. I also used the grid walls, that came back from the front "end cap", on this I had a shelf on the right and used hooks to display carabiner coin purses. Also in this view is my picture frame kanzashi display which I showed in this prior blog post. Baskets and trays display other items, I used a home made riser for an item which was simply a box wrapped in pretty gift wrap. I hope to add a few more pics as I still sort things out...and find one of the cameras.

As for the show itself, I had a great time and it was a great experience...would I do this show again...not sure? Though to be honest I am not sure I would ever do another 3 day show, especially when that show goes into a 4th day for set up. I learned a lot about doing big shows and know for sure I could improve upon my prep, set up and tear down. I have applied to a 2 day show in September, though a little reluctant fresh out of this show as the amount of work is still lingering, but I figure after 2 months I will be ready to go again.

Good news is I have lots of completed inventory to stock etsy, Yellow Door and a good jump start on holiday shows I already have planned.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-25988181056765298682012-07-11T15:48:00.001-04:002012-07-11T15:48:46.418-04:00Corn on The Cob Side Dish

Loving this new idea for corn on the cob, well in this instance it is off the cob. This is a good combination of ingredients with the abundant summer corn. You can also vary it to taste.

Cut corn off the cob. In a skillet lightly saute diced onions in butter, I was sort of generous with the butter as you will want it to coat the corn. Once onions are translucent add corn, continue to saute, season with parsley, I used about 1tsp per 2 ears of corn. Cook until corn is tender, or cooked through, season with salt and pepper to taste.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-26811609522393790702012-07-07T16:13:00.002-04:002012-07-07T16:16:04.504-04:00Picture Frame Display

I am always on the lookout for display ideas that go up. I have recently added Kanzashi and yo yo brooches to my line and these were my inspiration.

I recently got a perfect picture frame at a yard sale for $4.00 and this was a
perfect size to try my idea, and with little cost. I had thought I
might add a plate stand to help prop it up but that did not work for my
frame, then it occurred to me to try an artist easel, and recalling I
had seen table versions.

This is the tabletop easel I opted for, it has support bars on the top which I can move to properly support my picture frame.

My picture frame had a double matted print, I just flipped it over, this sturdy cardboard was enough body to hold in these little nails, they are poking out the back, I need to put something behind to help, for now I will just be careful. I also painted the cardboard with an acrylic paint. My original idea was to get a piece of 3/8 inch plywood or similar to put in the frame, I got lucky it worked as is.

I was able to get 30 brooches display, these are hung on business cards, I put a gold charger underneath to hold additional ones as well.

My total cost for my display was:
$4.00 yard sale frame
$9.00 Tabletop easel with coupon from Michaels
.59 cents acrylic paint.

Such a deal, and a great way to take a display UP!

Ok, maybe a little dramatic lots of activity for me, none of which is blogging. Summer vacation has started and four days in I have the feeling I am not the master of my destiny...well time anyway. This combined with getting ready for Plymouth Art In The Park has kept me busy and away from blogging, though I think about it and have some ideas I just cannot find the time to put down.

Really Plymouth prep has me completely consumed...well it has, I finally feel as though I have enough stock to take having JUST this week reached 1000, yes that is ONE THOUSAND items made. I will note I still have the stuff I am not fond of making still to do, like large totes so really some of these loose ends like the totes, list takers, e-readers and crayon rolls still to come.

Tomorrow is the annual neighbor hood garage sale which I am reluctantly doing - again giving away more time, since it is mainly me doing all the work. I am however going to use this opportunity to set up the tent and play around with displays and finalize my layout and get ready to make a few purchases...so that is sort of keeping me going, though the thought of un-storing and dragging out a thousand items seems challenging in the 90 degree heat we have been having in Michigan.

Anyway I am around but not blogging and thought while I am at it share some lovely treasury features.
We are nearing the end of the school year and if you're like me this
means little ones in the sewing room at least sometimes. It will be
inevitable I will have to sew with my soon to be first grader hanging
out with me, I do however have some item that help to occupy her and let
her be content and creative.

I thought I might offer
some ideas to help when our little helpers want to...help. Firstly I
should add I have a large table in which she can have a designated spot
to sit, so that is a huge plus. A small stool and some newspaper or
craft paper is good for more messy crafts, though I try to stay away
from those.
This first idea is an sort of educational
one, we have actually been doing this activity for years. It can be
done a few ways, this is how I do this. I also assume if you are a
crafter you may have some of these items on hand. This is to help with
vocabulary, spelling and reading.

What you will need.

Alpha beads or scrabble tiles, or we have a game called "Upwords"
which has large plastic letter tiles. If you don't have these you could
easily print some up. I would include the entire alphabet and extras
of common letters, this way sorting and choosing will be more of a
challenge.

Flash cards, again, if you don't have any you can make some, I did
this first with "sight words" for a good list this website has some
ideas. Flash cards are easy to find in most stores, or print some of
your own.

Choose or let your child choose a word and then from their
beads/tiles spell out the word. Have them sound it out, or use it in a
sentence for them. Pretty simple, and mine enjoyed the challenge of
doing it herself. We often ran out of beads or tiles before she was
done, she liked to see them all lined up.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-56853304821645652902012-05-21T12:59:00.001-04:002012-05-21T12:59:13.268-04:00Yellow Door Revamping My Space

It has been about 18 months since I signed onto and Yellow Door Art Market opened, I decided with the renewing of my lease in April it was time for a change. I finally got a chance to go and revamp my space.

As a recap, I rent a 9 foot by 9 foot space, it is a full retail shop open seven days a week, I display and stock my space as needed, it has been a great experience and a great expansion to my handmade business.
I have repainted from green to yellow, the color pallette is the same for all the spaces, we can paint any of the designated colors. I am reducing the number of purse waterfalls from 4 to 5 to allow some other product changes. I will also be taking in and taking back some furniture for displays.
Today I removed the wristlet wall and the purse waterfalls and painted, I did sort of get 2 coats so hopefully I won't have to fully paint again, touch up and patching holes is my next task, hopefully Tuesday.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-57910283723534041882012-05-20T22:19:00.000-04:002012-05-20T22:24:04.546-04:00Mass Producing The Handmade Way: Why Size Matters

I am in SERIOUS production mode, I am getting ready for my biggest show EVER. Mid July will be the Plymouth Art in The Park, the estimated attendance is about 300,000 - yes, I meant to type all those zeros. In anticipation of this I am trying to have ready to go about 1000 items, I have just over 700 DONE, and about 2 months to go.

I have made a list of my current line along with my "wish list" inventory, here I record what is made and supplies needed and any notes that help in planning. I also have outlined timing for packaging and finishing touches, like buttons, zip pulls, tagging, etc. I have been plotting these into my calendar to keep on track.

It is very typical for me to make those items which are fast, easy and fun first and most, therefore I have many more of these items done. I still have other outlets to stock so I can keep making these but this week I needed to focus on the more detailed oriented items this week it's kanzashi coin purses, 8 patch wristlets, pieced shoulder bags and snap clutches.

An example of how I work in common size, my coin purse, and wristlet are the same "height" this height is also the same size as the length of my mini coin purse. Cutting items like linings and interfacings reduce the amount of waste if their size is common.

I have posted many times my stockpiling of common components and this allows me to make lots of items quickly of these components such as coin purses (all sizes) wristlets and totes, these are my best sellers so it makes sense for me to keep many dozen in progress at all times.

However it has dawned on me again the importance and gained efficiency of working in common size. I am working on the kanzashi coin purses, and I am working with 3-5 sizes of basically the same item, it is becoming a big time suck custom cutting a few at a time, but to this I am always re-measuring what is done to properly line up linings and zippers.

Originally I used common sized items because of shipping supplies, since I was firstly only selling online. Using less types of envelopes and boxes ultimately makes buying and storing less sizes more cost efficient, often I have discontinued items based solely on my ability to ship.

This is also applied to supplies, for example zippers, I only buy 2 sizes, and I buy my most common colors in lots of 100, and other lesser used quantities in lots of 12-36.

For most my items common size is the way to go, for one of a kind items or special fussy cut items I try to work on those in my more leisure sewing and not full production mode. Hmmm, I think that could be another blog subject.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-83865742899672154082012-05-16T08:00:00.000-04:002012-05-16T22:42:37.408-04:00Bevy of Bookmarks all from Scraps

Yay! That is my first thought at all these projects that use up scraps. I save just about everything, and times when I don't save an odd and end I often regret it, I am going to refer to these moments as "never say never crafting supplies".

These bookmarks are made up of three elements of which I have been hanging onto for a long time. Skinny fabric pieces, skinny interfacing pieces and small bits of ribbon. Some fabrics are just too cute to throw away no matter how small, I already have quite a few items I offer from scraps, like mirrors, paperclip bookmarks, magnets, hair accessories, coasters...and more. Now these bookmarks will be offered at some of my upcoming offline events.

This collection of fabric started simply by a leftover and thinking it looks just like a bookmark, the same thing happened with skinny interfacing leftovers too...hmm, fabric for cute and interfacing for body. I have done these in another post a much more involved type of bookmark here, but I wanted fast and simple, so I cut down the steps and made about 40 of these in a few short hours.

I trimmed the fabric and interfacing to more or less the same size, thought this is not a requirement. I did work in a common size for most about 2.5 inches wide by 9 inches tall, again it can be any size. I did try to have the interfacing which will provide the stability to be about the same size.

My interfacing is medium or heavy weight fusible, so I first fuse to the back side of my fabric, layer with a backing fabric and trim the top with pinking blade or sheers. Pin together to keep the pinked edge lined up. This will be the top and where you will put the ribbon tab. Again mainly relying on scrap ribbon using 11-12 inch piece loop and put edges inside the top of the book mark, inside about 1/2 inch.

These will be raw edged, so your layering would be right side up (interfacing should be sewn on) then your backing fabric should be right side down.

I did my start and stop stitch at the point where the ribbon is in the bookmark, and sew around the rectangle back to the start. I used about 1/4 inch seam, this can vary as needed or as you like.

Trim around all 4 edges with pinking blade or shears to cut down on raveling.
May 5th was the Flint Handmade Spring Show, I had a great show and a great time. Also got some pictures done by a local photographer, they turned out great, so I have a few for show and tell.
Also a picture of my own, this is a nifty trick I had not really seen or
not really thought of doing. I had done the week prior the Craft
Circus in Ypsilanti and a few of the vendors did this. It came at the
perfect time as I have been wanting/needing to add height to my table
and displays. The idea is to use bed risers under your table, so a trip
to Bed Bath and Beyond I got some for myself, I actually plan to get a second set.

Here is my table with the risers, this did leave my tablecloths not perfect they do cover but I had to pin to hide a gap. This show was also the reminder that there is a huge difference in an 8 foot table vs. a 6 foot table.Midnight Creationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03399457941977654619noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140776699347552227.post-18762757313336248852012-05-14T12:42:00.001-04:002012-05-14T12:42:39.819-04:00Pinch Pot for Mothers Day

I got this lovely gift for Mothers Day from my kindergartner, a lovely pinch pot. I had actually been hearing about this for a while and wondered when it would be coming home. A lovely surprise it came home wrapped and with a handmade pop up card...too sweet.
